This introduction has been adapted and updated from that originally prepared by D.M.Barrett for British Record Society vol.109. The compilation and publication of this index has been a co-operative effort with contributions from numerous persons over many years, not all of which can now be properly and individually acknowledged. I have already paid tribute to the labours of Maude Wheeler, Leslie Wood and Dr. Jean Andrews; I also gratefully acknowledge the contributions made by other unnamed volunteers, members of the Bodleian Library staff, and more recently staff of the Oxfordshire County Record Office towards the work of completing the slip index.
